Life Skills Workbook for Teens: Art & Writing Journal for Social & Emotional Learning

Life Skills Workbook for Teens: Art & Writing Journal for Social & Emotional LearningWelcome to the adventure of finding and developing your inner strengths by learning life skills. To help learn social and emotional skills for life, I have made this an interactive book. The activities have been used successfully by thousands of teens and young adults from middle and high school and beyond for over thirty-five years. We know they work if you work them.

Social & emotional skills are the focus of this workbook. Emotional health depends on knowing how you feel, what you need, what you want, and what you want to do. This is knowledge you will gain in using your Life Skills Workbook.

You’ll be expressing and accepting your innermost feelings and thoughts in the safety of a private journal. This journal is for your eyes only. No one else will be grading or criticizing what you draw and write. This is a personal journal, a place to sort out your feelings and thoughts without pressure from others. Keeping a personal journal is especially valuable when you are faced with challenges. Expressing feelings in the safety of a private journal will help you think more clearly and sort out your values and what actions to take.

Doing the activities in this workbook will also help you communicate more clearly with others. You’ll have words for expressing how you feel, what you need, what you want, and what you want to do. As you become more aware of your own feelings you will also learn to be more aware of the feelings of others. Emotional awareness leads to more mutual respect and better relationships.

The techniques in this workbook include drawing and writing with your dominant as well as your nondominant hand. This method has been shown to help balance the hemispheres of the brain and lead to more creativity, social and emotional awareness, resilience and the ability to set goals and reach them. You do not have to have talent, skill or training in the arts to benefit from this method. No one will see what you do in this private journal, so critiques and judgment are not an issue here. This is a place to relax and be yourself.
